Five people were trapped 200 feet below the ground at Grand Canyon Caverns in Arizona. Many people walked up 21 flights of stairs, but around five could not and stayed behind. They stayed behind because they could not physically do so or chose to remain behind with those, who couldn't. The group got accommodation and food from a hotel and a restaurant in front of the caverns. The caverns are 65 million years old and are one of the largest in the United States.

The officials thought that the malfunction in their elevator was because of an electrical fault, but now they believe the fault was mechanical, as an external generator that arrived on Monday was set up but could not fix the problem. The sheriff's office representative said that elevator experts had been called in, but they had not yet arrived at the scene because they were coming from a long way away. The sheriff sent a rescue team to lift people one by one.
