ASTS stock today falls 14%: Why AST SpaceMobile shares are down after SpaceX Spectrum Deal
ASTS stock came under pressure after SpaceX agreed to acquire Grain Management’s nationwide low-band spectrum portfolio that AST SpaceMobile had also pursued. The deal closes off one potential source of additional spectrum for ASTS. Rocket Lab and...

Just after the announcement, ASTS traded at $53.67, down 6%. Rocket Lab (RKLB) fell 1% to $67.52, Planet Labs (PL) dropped 2% to $16.81 but Procure Space ETF (UFO) rose 0.18% to $42.08.
Why AST SpaceMobile (ASTS) Stock Is Falling
The development centers on SpaceX’s agreement to acquire Grain Management’s nationwide 800 MHz spectrum portfolio. Grain Management is a privately held spectrum owner.AST SpaceMobile had pursued the same frequencies. SpaceX’s agreement closes off one potential source of additional low-band spectrum for ASTS, although the company’s existing commercial carrier arrangements remain unchanged.
The transaction remains subject to approval from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), and its financial terms have not been disclosed. Grain Management announced the definitive agreement on October 8, stating that the transaction also depends on other customary closing conditions, as per 24/7 Wall St report.
Low-band frequencies can travel long distances and penetrate buildings, making them useful for satellite-to-device connectivity. The agreement is relevant to AST SpaceMobile because it removes one potential source of additional low-band spectrum that the company had pursued. It does not mean AST SpaceMobile owned or had already secured those frequencies.
AST SpaceMobile’s Ligado Agreements Remain Separate
AST SpaceMobile has definitive agreements with Ligado Networks for long-term access to lower mid-band spectrum in the United States and Canada. Those arrangements are separate from SpaceX’s agreement with Grain Management. As per 24/7 Wall St report, Roger Entner of Recon Analytics said, “Ligado is next.” The remark reflects the analyst’s assessment, it does not confirm that another transaction involving Ligado is underway.
Rocket Lab and Planet Labs Shares Also Decline
The companies have different business models from AST SpaceMobile. Rocket Lab provides launch services and spacecraft hardware and Planet Labs operates Earth imaging satellite constellation. Neither relies on direct-to-device spectrum. The Procure Space ETF, by contrast, gained. So these figures show mixed performance among the three stocks and the fund during the morning session but they do not establish a common reason for each price movement.
What Happens Next
The SpaceX-Grain Management agreement remains subject to regulatory approval, and its financial terms have not been disclosed. For AST SpaceMobile, the key development is that one potential source of additional low-band spectrum it had pursued is no longer available through the portfolio covered by the agreement. Its existing commercial carrier arrangements and definitive agreements with Ligado Networks remain separate from the announced transaction.
