Trump Implements Key Campaign Promises
Since assuming office for the second term, Trump has initiated a large-scale deportation programme. He also proposed an executive order to redefine birthright citizenship and proclaimed that the United States’ sovereignty was in danger. He, thus, suggested declaring a national emergency to enhance immigration enforcement, stated media reports.Though he has not provided much specifics on how he would make up for the lost revenue, he has pledged in economic policy to reduce taxes on tips and Social Security benefits. Furthermore, he has declared plans to levy tax on imports—including a 10 per cent duty on Chinese goods and a 25 per cent charge on products from Mexico and Canada.
As per the media reports, Trump has also stated that he plans to end the Russo-Ukrainian war, however details on how he plans to approach this are still hazy. Thus far, Trump has attempted to broker a deal to end the war. He recently met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Reportedly, Trump has also held talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin in an attempt to reach a ceasefire agreement.
In addition to international affairs, Trump has also begun layoffs of federal employees and has established the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). Billionaire Elon Musk heads the department, which has laid off several government employees so far. He has also announced cuts in federal funding to universities and several programmes launched by the Biden administration. He is also reversing several DEI programmes.
