Arizona Senator Krysten Sinema quits Democratic Party and registers as Independent
Kyrsten Sinema said her decision makes sense because she has never fit neatly into any party box.
Sinema Making a Big Change
Kyrsten Sinema said her decision makes sense because she has never fit neatly into any party box. She says that by removing herself from the partisan structure, she is staying true to herself. She is also providing a space for many people in the country and her state who are no longer in favour of partisanship.
Results of the Move
The power balance in the next Senate is unlikely to be affected by Sinema’s change. The Democrats will maintain a 51-49 majority, which includes two independents. However, Sinema did not make any statement that she would support the party. She did say that she would fulfil her committee assignments.
Since Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer is the controller of the committee rosters, this can be interpreted that she has no intentions of changing the Senate composition.
Sinema hoped that her daily work would be the same and that she would continue in her capacities in all the committees where she serves with colleagues from both parties.
Sinema’s Journey
Sinema began her career as a member of the Green Party. She was elected to the US House as a Democrat in 2012 and the Senate in 2018. She has always been free to voice her criticisms of the party leaders and has been known to go against the grain.
