The shooting occurred around 7:30 a.m. near milepost 15 on West Arivaca Road in southern Pima County, according to the Pima County Sheriff’s Department, reported NBC News. The Santa Rita Fire District said the individual was found in critical condition and rushed from the scene for emergency treatment.

Fire crews from Santa Rita Fire District and American Medical Response provided care before transferring the patient to a medical helicopter for rapid transport to a regional trauma center. No further details about the person’s condition were immediately available.


The fire department said, "Patient care was transferred to a local medical helicopter for rapid transport to a regional trauma center," adding, "The incident remains under active investigation by law enforcement agencies," as quoted by NBC News.

The PCSD said, "We ask the community to remain patient and understanding as this investigation moves forward," adding, "PCSD will thoroughly examine all aspects of the incident, however, these investigations are complex and require time," as quoted by NBC News.

The shooting comes as federal immigration enforcement faces growing public scrutiny. It occurred just days after Border Patrol fatally shot Alex Pretti in Minneapolis and weeks after an Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer shot and killed Renee Good.
