Arizona GOP leader Kelli Ward wins temporary halt to turnover phone records

Nothing could go further after justice Elena Kagan's order on Wednesday night until the Supreme Court heard an emergency appeal filed by GOP state head Kelli Ward.

Kelli Ward, the state party chair, has argued that her First Amendment rights would be violated if investigators learned who she corresponded with while plotting to challenge former President Donald Trump's election defeat in 2020.

A federal appeals court panel decided 2-1 against Ward over the weekend, meaning the committee may request Ward's phone logs from November 2020 through January 31, 2021. This spanned the period when Democratic Joe Biden was ready to be certified as the winner of the race, and Republican Ward was calling for a recount.


In an urgent matter before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, Ward asked Justice Elena Kagan to halt the lower court's ruling temporarily.



Kagan made a temporary adjustment on Wednesday when she said the materials should be released later. Kagan says that the House committee has until Friday night to respond to Ward's appeal to the Supreme Court.

Kelli Ward and her husband, Michael Ward, both presidential electors, have said they would have voted for Trump if he had won Arizona. Both signed a statement asserting that they are the actual electors of Arizona, notwithstanding Biden's victory there.
