Are Chimpanzees speaking English? New study reveals surprising findings from old footage
A recent study casts doubt on the notion that only humans are capable of speaking simple phrases by indicating that chimpanzees may also be able to do so. Historical experiment video provided evidence that researchers discovered, providing fresh p...

Researchers reviewed old experiment footage, some of which showed chimps in grim and unethical conditions. They observed that these chimps, despite their harsh environment, managed to vocalize the word "mama." This discovery suggests that chimpanzees might have a basic ability to use language, contradicting the previous assumption that they are incapable of speech.
Neuroscientific insights
Dr. Axel Ekstrom from the KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Sweden led the research. He explained that a crucial difference between humans and chimpanzees lies in brain structure. Humans have an overlap between the brain area controlling jaw movement and the area responsible for the voice box, enabling syllabic speech that develops into adult language. The absence of this overlap in chimps has been thought to prevent them from speaking like humans, according to the Kuypers-Jurgens hypothesis. Also Read : Massive controversy surrounds Paris Olympics swimming: Luke Greenbank stands disqualified, Xu Jiayu a no-show
Supporting evidence from footage
Two videos were instrumental in supporting the researchers' claims. The first video featured a chimp named Johnny from the Suncoast Primate Sanctuary in Florida, who reportedly called everyone "mama." The second video, a 1962 newsreel from Universal Studios, showed a chimp named Renata, who seemed to vocalize "mama" when prompted by her handler. To validate their findings, scientists conducted an online listening experiment. Participants listened to audio clips of the chimps' vocalizations mixed with clips of people diagnosed with Parkinson's disease. Most participants agreed that the chimps were saying "mama," reinforcing the researchers' hypothesis.
A historical experiment from 1947 involved Keith and Catherine Hayes adopting a chimp named Viki, whom they raised as a child. The couple claimed that Viki could say simple words like "mama," "cup," and "up."
