Adult cigarette smoking in the United States has significantly decreased, according to a recent Gallup poll, to the lowest level ever. A mere 11% of Americans said they had smoked in the previous week, according to a survey conducted from July 1 to July 21. In contrast to earlier data, which showed substantially greater smoking rates, this number shows a remarkable decline, as per the reports of the New York Post.

Decline across generations

The poll indicates that cigarette smoking is especially low among younger adults. Just 6 percent of people under 30 reported smoking recently. This is a stark contrast to earlier decades. In 1944, when Gallup first began tracking smoking rates, 41 percent of adults smoked. By the 1950s, the rate was 45 percent, and it remained high in the 1980s with over a third of Americans admitting to smoking.

Shift in youth smoking habits

The significant drop in smoking rates among younger individuals has been a key factor in the overall decline. In the early 2000s, about 35 percent of Americans under 30 smoked cigarettes. Today, this age group is the least likely to smoke, though they are more inclined to use e-cigarettes. Gallup data shows that 18 percent of adults aged 18 to 29 vape, compared to just 1 percent of those aged 65 and older.

Education and smoking rates

The Gallup poll also highlights a connection between smoking rates and educational attainment. Only 5 percent of college graduates reported smoking cigarettes, while 15 percent of those without a college degree did. This difference underscores how educational background might influence smoking habits.

Growing public knowledge of the health dangers of cigarettes may have contributed to the drop in smoking rates. In contrast to prior years, about 80% of American adults now consider cigarettes to be "very harmful." By contrast, just 57% of adults had the same opinion of e-cigarettes. Although most people still view chewing tobacco as "somewhat harmful," there is a significant negative perception associated with it. In contrast, cigars, pipes, and nicotine pouches are perceived as less harmful.
