The White House has released forms for the controversial student debt waiver announced by US President Joe Biden in August.
The announcement on Tuesday noted the steps to apply for student loan relief, which could benefit millions of Americans. The White House also revealed the plans to prevent fraudulent applicants from misusing the relief program.
The senior officials also revealed a preview of the application form, which the applicants would need to fill out to access the student loan waiver. The form will be available on a government website later this month, along with a mobile format. Moreover, the form will also be available in Spanish for better accessibility.
The student waiver became a topic of debate among political, financial, and business circles across the western hemisphere soon after the POTUS announced it. The supporters termed it as one of the much-needed measures to help students from humble backgrounds who were affected due to COVID-19.
The relief program is for individual borrowers whose gross annual income in 2020 or 2021 was below $125,000. The maximum gross yearly income cap for couples filing taxes jointly was $250,000. According to a CNBC report, the total cost to the government for the entire program was between $440 billion and $600 billion.
