Apple has eventually agreed to pay $95 million to settle a class action lawsuit which concerned severe privacy violations related to its Siri voice assistant, reported Engadget.

According to Engadget, the lawsuit which actually dates back to the year 2019 eventually alleged that Apple recorded private conversations without the consent of the said user when the ‘Hey Siri’ feature was unintentionally activated. More than that, these recordings were reportedly shared with third parties which included advertisers while leading to targeted ads based on the private discussions of the user.

The proposed settlement which is being filed in a federal court in Oakland located in California actually requires approval from the US District Judge Jeffrey White before it becomes official, asserted Engadget. If the proposed settlement gets approved then the eligible class members which is being estimated to be in the tens of millions could eventually receive up to $20 for each Siri enabled device they owned between the dates of September 17, 2014 and December 31, 2024.

All the users must affirm under oath that they actually experienced unintentional activations during private conversations to qualify for any sort of compensation.

In spite of agreeing to the settlement, at the same time, Apple totally denies any sort of wrongdoing and has implemented several changes since the lawsuit began which included suspending its quality control program that involved reviewing Siri recordings, noted Engadget. The settlement actually highlights ongoing privacy concerns surrounding the digital assistants and the severe challenges tech companies face in balancing user privacy with product improvement.
