Just a fortnight after the launch of iOS 18.4, Apple pushed yet another update and urged users to update their devices with urgency. The tech-giant’s iOS 18.4.1 update came after two critical vulnerabilities in the previous version were being exploited in targeted attacks.

News of Apple releasing an interim update ahead of the grand release of iOS 18.5 had caught the users off guard, stated media reports.

iOS 18.4.1 update: ALl you need to know

According to the media reports, the iOS 18.4.1 update fixed two serious zero-day vulnerabilities. Reportedly, the first bug was a CoreAudio Exploit. This included a flaw in how iPhones processed audio streams from potentially malicious sources. This bug could have potentially allowed remote code execution.

The second bug has been fixed: the Return Pointer Authentication Code (RPAC) flaw. This was a bypass vulnerability that compromised Apple's memory protection system. This gave attackers an unauthorised read-and-write access.

Reportedly, both these security flaws were exploited in extremely sophisticated attacks which were aimed at high-profile persons including journalists and government officials.

Wireless CarPlay bug resolved

As per the reports, the update also addressed a rare issue which prevented wireless CarPlay from connecting in certain vehicles. The wired CarPlay was unaffected. Although the tech giant said the issue was ‘rare’, it did cause significant frustration for users who rely on navigation and media features while driving.

Security experts pointed out the imperative nature of this patch. Security firm Jamf's Adam Boynton told Express UK that with security fixes in iOS 18.4.1, they (Apple) have taken care of two zero-day exploits. All consumers should update their Apple devices as soon as possible, he said.

Apple has countered the vulnerabilities through better memory management and pointer authentication upgrades, he added.
