After spending nearly two decades in open beta, Archive of Our Own, better known as AO3, has officially dropped the label that had become part of its identity. For millions of fan fiction readers and writers, the change marks a symbolic milestone rather than a dramatic shift in how the platform works.

Launched in 2009 by the Organization for Transformative Works, the nonprofit site has grown from a small volunteer-driven archive into one of the internet’s most beloved creative communities. While the “beta” tag is gone, the spirit of constant improvement remains very much intact.

Why did AO3 stay in beta for so long?

Archive of Our Own, widely known as AO3, has officially come out of beta after 17 years, closing a long chapter in the history of one of the internet’s most popular fan fiction websites. The platform first launched in open beta in 2009 under the nonprofit Organization for Transformative Works. Back then, it was a much smaller space, with just 347 registered accounts and 6,598 fan-created works. In its earliest days, volunteers even manually sent invitations to writers who wanted to join.

Today, the numbers tell a very different story. AO3 now has more than 10 million registered users and hosts over 17 million fan-created works, making it one of the largest and most influential fan fiction archives online.

For many users, the word “beta” had become almost inseparable from AO3’s identity. Despite that label, the site has been stable for years, as per reports by The Verge and Engadget.

“Since 2009, AO3 has grown and changed a lot,” the announcement says. “We’ve introduced many features over the years through the efforts of our volunteers and coding contributors, as well as the contractors we’ve been able to hire thanks to generous donations from our users."

According to the announcement, leaving beta does not signal a major overhaul. Instead, the change is largely symbolic and cosmetic. One of the most noticeable differences is the removal of the tiny “beta” label from the AO3 logo at the top of the site.

The team also reflected on how far the platform has come since launch, noting that its growth has been shaped by volunteers, coding contributors, and contractors supported by user donations.

How much has AO3 grown since 2009?

Over the past 17 years, AO3 has introduced several features that have become central to the fan fiction experience. Among the most notable is its detailed tagging system, which allows users to sort and discover works by characters, relationships, themes, and story elements.

The platform also highlighted the “Orphaning” feature, which lets authors remove their accounts while keeping their stories available for readers. Another key addition has been the ability to download works in formats such as AZW3, EPUB, MOBI, PDF, and HTML for offline reading, as per reports by The Verge and Engadget.

Privacy settings have also given creators more control, allowing them to limit who can access their work, as per reports by The Verge and Engadget.

What changes now that beta is gone?

For everyday users, very little will feel different. The organization made it clear that exiting beta does not mean the platform is finished evolving. In fact, volunteers and contributors will continue improving the site and adding new features. The announcement emphasized that the change should not be seen as an endpoint. Instead, it reflects confidence in the site’s long-term stability while preserving its commitment to growth.

For a platform built by fans for fans, this moment feels less like an ending and more like the beginning of its next era.
