The Texas Department of Public Safety has issued a security warning to state lawmakers and staff. The alert came ahead of a planned protest against President Donald Trump at the Capitol in Austin. The warning follows a shooting involving Minnesota lawmakers earlier the same day.

On Saturday, Texas lawmakers received a warning from the Department of Public Safety. The alert mentioned credible threats linked to a scheduled anti-Trump protest in Austin. The warning was issued around 1 p.m., a Texas Tribune report said. A DPS spokesperson confirmed that the Capitol was evacuated shortly afterward.

Law Enforcement Coordination Underway

The Texas DPS stated it is working with local, state and federal law enforcement. Their aim is to ensure safety for both the public and state property. They also want to protect people exercising their rights to free speech and assembly. The protest is scheduled for 5 p.m. in downtown Austin.

Officials Expected to Attend Rally

Several Democratic officials plan to speak at the event. These include US Representatives Greg Casar and Lloyd Doggett. State Representatives Lulu Flores and John Bucy III will also attend, along with State Senator Sarah Eckhardt. The event is part of larger protests taking place across the country on the same day.

Nationwide Protests

Protests against Trump’s administration are being held in many cities. Participants are speaking out against his immigration policies and governance style. The protests coincide with a planned military parade in Washington, D.C. The parade marks Trump’s birthday and the US Army’s 250th anniversary.

Minnesota Shooting

Earlier on Saturday, a man dressed as a police officer shot two Minnesota lawmakers and their spouses. Minnesota House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband were killed. Senator John Hoffman and his wife were also injured. The incidents occurred at their homes, according to the Associated Press.

Precautions and Investigation Continue

Texas House Administration Chair Charlie Geren informed staff that officials are taking all necessary steps. He noted the event seems isolated for now. However, authorities remain alert to prevent copycat incidents or related threats.
