US President Joe Biden had another moment of confusion during a Quad event in Delaware on Sunday, when he momentarily forgot to introduce Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on stage.

The leaders of the Quad — including the US, India, Australia, and Japan — had gathered to launch the Cancer Moonshot initiative to reduce cancer burdens across the Indo-Pacific.

However, the spotlight shifted momentarily from the diplomatic agenda to Biden’s forgetful gaffe.

After delivering his remarks on the Cancer Moonshot initiative, President Biden seemed unsure of his next step and, visibly confused, asked, “Who am I introducing next? Who’s next?”

The moderator quickly stepped in and announced Prime Minister Modi’s name, allowing him to take the stage and deliver his address, as mentioned in a report by India Today. This incident once again brought attention to concerns about Biden’s mental sharpness as he nears the end of his presidency.

Biden, PM Modi, and Quad’s Cancer Moonshot Initiative

The event was part of the sixth edition of the Quad Leaders’ Summit, hosted by Biden in his hometown of Delaware. Alongside PM Modi, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida were also present. The leaders launched the Cancer Moonshot initiative, a project aimed at combating cancer, with a particular focus on cervical cancer in the Indo-Pacific region.

While the launch was a significant moment in the Quad's collaborative efforts, Biden’s momentary lapse became a talking point. This is not the first time Biden has experienced such incidents during public events, sparking questions about his health and fitness for office as he prepares to step down in 2025.

A Pattern of Gaffes

Biden’s slip-up during the Quad summit was reminiscent of previous moments where he appeared to lose track during public events. In July 2023, during a NATO summit in Washington, Biden mistakenly referred to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy as Russian President Vladimir Putin. This occurred shortly after Biden had vowed support for Ukraine in its fight against Russia, making the gaffe all the more notable.

In that instance, Biden quickly corrected himself, and Zelenskyy, known for his quick wit, responded humorously, saying, “I am better than Putin.” Despite the light-hearted recovery, such incidents have fueled concerns about Biden’s mental sharpness as the 81-year-old leader approaches the final years of his term.

Concerns Over Biden’s Health

The US President has faced increasing scrutiny over his cognitive health, particularly after a series of public gaffes and moments where he appeared confused or lost for words. His performance during the first presidential debate with former President Donald Trump in 2020 raised further questions, with Biden stammering and fumbling his words several times.

These incidents led to speculation about his ability to seek re-election, ultimately resulting in his decision to withdraw from the race in favor of Vice President Kamala Harris.
