Anime industry hits $2.45 billion, yet 60 per cent of studios see declining profits; what does it mean for fans
Japanese anime industry is experiencing record growth with an estimated market of $2.45 billion in 2024. Teikoku Databank survey reveals a concerning trend. Many production studios are facing revenue decline and operating losses. A shortage of ani...

The survey says the domestic anime production market was estimated at roughly $2.45 billion in 2024, a 4 per cent increase from 2023 and a new record high.
Despite this staggering success, however, 20.9 per cent of anime companies experienced a revenue decline compared to the previous year, while 41.8 per cent remained flat. This means that only 37.2 per cent of anime producers increased their revenue in 2024 compared to 2023.
The challenges for anime studios extend beyond just the bad news. Even though these studios recorded higher revenues, their actual profits took a significant hit. Specifically, 40 per cent of companies reported increased profits compared to the previous year, while 25.5 per cent experienced a decline in profits, and 34.5 per cent fell into operating losses.
Although record profits in the anime industry suggest it is healthy, many individual studios appear to be struggling significantly.
Why are the studios struggling?
According to Teikoku Databank, the labor issues are tied to studios being forced to extend anime release schedules, leading to higher production costs and, therefore, less profit.
Looking at the state of the industry, it's hard to disagree with Teikoku Databank's findings.
What does it mean for anime lovers?
Although anime is not in immediate danger, substantial and systemic changes are necessary for it to continue thriving as a global phenomenon.
However the data looks, the good news is that anime isn't going anywhere anytime soon. The ScreenRant explains that the industry is generating significant revenue at the top level, ensuring its survival, at least in the near future.
While Teikoku's numbers are indeed concerning and highlight the need for a change in the industry's relationship with labor, the overall growth of anime remains steady.
Another statistic from Teikoku Database is more alarming. In 2023, the number of anime series produced reached its lowest point in a decade, with only 300 new series created. While this is still a notable figure, it is significantly lower than the 361 titles produced in 2016.
