Nolan Schanuel delivered a clutch, broken-bat double in the 11th inning to lift the Los Angeles Angels to a gritty 1-0 win over the New York Yankees on Monday night at Yankee Stadium.

With one out and Christian Moore serving as the automatic runner, Schanuel ripped a grounder down the left-field line off Jonathan Loaisiga (0-1), giving the Angels the lead in a tense pitchers’ duel.

The Angels loaded the bases following walks to Mike Trout (intentional) and Taylor Ward, but failed to add insurance. The Yankees nearly rallied in the bottom half, loading the bases against Brock Burke. However, Hunter Strickland needed just one pitch to retire Anthony Volpe and end the threat.

Earlier in the inning, after Aaron Judge was walked intentionally for the second time, Cody Bellinger advanced Paul Goldschmidt to third with a deep fly ball. But Moore threw Goldschmidt out at home on Jasson Domínguez’s grounder, and though Jazz Chisholm Jr. extended the inning with an infield single, the Yankees came up short.

Schanuel’s go-ahead RBI snapped a three-game skid for the Angels and marked their first 1-0 win over the Yankees in New York since August 1, 2008. Ryan Zeferjahn (4-1) earned the win with a clean 10th after Kenley Jansen escaped a jam in the ninth.

Giancarlo Stanton made his season debut for the Yankees after missing 70 games with elbow inflammation, going 2-for-4. He opened the ninth with a double down the left-field line, but Jansen kept the game scoreless by striking out Austin Wells with Volpe stranded on second.

The loss marked a season-high fourth straight defeat for the Yankees, who went 1-for-18 with runners in scoring position.
