Angels stun Dodgers again, seal season sweep with late rally

Logan O'Hoppe delivered the decisive blow with a two-out, two-run single in the eighth inning, lifting the Los Angeles Angels to a 6-5 comeback win over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Wednesday in Anaheim, California. The victory secured the Angels’ first-ever six-game Freeway Series sweep of their Southern California rivals, surpassing their previous best of 4-0 in 2019.


The Dodgers, losers of four straight, dropped one game behind the San Diego Padres in the NL West, marking their first time out of first place since April 27.



Trailing 4-5 in the eighth, Mike Trout and Taylor Ward drew walks to start the inning against Justin Wrobleski (4-4). Jo Adell’s infield single loaded the bases, and after Luis Rengifo struck out, O’Hoppe lined a 103.2 mph fastball from Edgardo Henriquez into center, scoring Trout and Ward.


Brock Burke (6-1) earned the win with a scoreless inning, while Kenley Jansen worked a perfect ninth for his 23rd save. Ward homered and scored twice, Zach Neto hit a two-run double, and Bryce Teodosio doubled, singled, and made a leaping catch to rob Andy Pages of a two-run homer in the seventh.


For the Dodgers, Will Smith homered and drove in three runs, Mookie Betts went 2-for-5 with two RBIs, and Shohei Ohtani tripled, scored, and pitched a season-high 4 1/3 innings in his ninth start since Tommy John surgery. Ohtani allowed four runs on five hits, striking out seven on 80 pitches.

The Dodgers raced to a 3-0 first-inning lead, highlighted by Ohtani’s triple and Smith’s two-run blast. The Angels battled back with Ward’s homer and Rengifo’s sacrifice fly, then pulled within one on Neto’s two-run double before O’Hoppe’s clutch hit sealed the sweep.
