The 66-year-old said that not winning the Oscar left her feeling sad. In an interview with Town and Country, The Black Panther: Wakanda Forever star said that she thought considering the time and effort she had put in, the award was not a gift, but “a given”.


Notably, Bassett did not criticise Curtis’ win. She shared that it was interesting for her to see reactions that condemned her disappointed expression for an honour she thought that she did deserve.

The actress talked about her time as a student at Yale and confessed to suffering from imposter syndrome. She admitted that she felt she would not be able to compete with her privileged classmates. Bassett said that she still feels that way, but does not shy away from going ahead with things. For her, this is what constitutes courage.

The actress has a Bachelor’s in African American Studies and a Master’s Fine Arts from the university. She was awarded an honorary doctorate by Yale in 2018.
