Friedman made significant contributions to the representation of individuals with Down Syndrome in the entertainment industry, portraying Amanda Swanson in "Life Goes On," a groundbreaking character who eventually became the wife of Corky Thacher. Her extensive career also saw her appearances in notable series like "Baywatch," "ER," and "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit," establishing her presence in an industry where inclusivity was often scarce.
In 2010, Friedman exhibited grace and resilience when voicing a character with Down syndrome, Ellen, in an episode of "Family Guy." The cartoon sparked controversy when Ellen humorously mentioned her parents, including the fictional detail that her mother was the former governor of Alaska, alluding to Sarah Palin's son, Trig Palin, who also has Down syndrome. Despite criticism from Palin, Friedman responded with poise, emphasising that her character aimed to be inspirational rather than derisive.
Friedman's final film project, "Carol of the Bells" (2019), added another dimension to her impactful career. The film, recognized for its representation of disability, featured up to 70 percent of the crew with developmental disabilities, marking a significant step toward breaking stigmas.
Beyond acting, Friedman served as an assistant teacher at UCLA's Pathway program, contributing to initiatives that empower students to lead independent lives. Her legacy lives on through her surviving family members, including her sister, brother-in-law, nephews, and father.
