Americans in one state will soon be adding a new date to their holiday calendars. Beginning in 2026, California will officially recognize this festival as a state holiday, giving many residents an additional day off. The move marks a major moment for the state’s large Indian and South Asian American communities.

What is this brand-new holiday in 2026?

California will officially observe Diwali as a state holiday starting in 2026. Diwali does not fall on the same date every year, but it is always celebrated in the fall. In 2026, Diwali will take place on Sunday, Nov. 8. Because the holiday falls on a weekend, California will officially observe it the following day, Monday, Nov. 9.

This observance will allow state employees to take the day off and gives public schools and community colleges the option to close. The announcement follows the signing of a new law earlier this year and places California among just a handful of states to formally honor the Festival of Lights.

Why did California add Diwali as a state holiday?

California is home to roughly 960,000 Indian Americans, representing about 20% of the Indian American population in the United States. The new holiday reflects the cultural and religious importance of Diwali to millions of residents across the state.

Governor Gavin Newsom signed the bill into law in October, formally adding Diwali to the state holiday calendar. After signing the bill, Newsom shared a message celebrating the occasion, as per a report by The US Sun.

“Happy Diwali, California,” he posted on X.

Diwali has also received recognition at the national level. President Donald Trump marked the holiday last year with a message honoring its meaning and significance, as per a report by The US Sun.

How is Diwali celebrated across California?

Diwali is celebrated in Hindu, Sikh, Jain, and some Buddhist traditions and honors the triumph of good over evil, light over darkness, and knowledge over ignorance. The holiday also pays tribute to goddess Lakshmi and Ganesha.

California’s Bay Area hosts the largest Diwali celebrations in North America. Communities across Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Solano, and Sonoma counties take part in major annual events, as per a report by The US Sun.

Festivals are held each year at the Alameda County Fairgrounds and Memorial Park in Cupertino, featuring Indian music, dance performances, food vendors, children’s zones, and fireworks displays.

With California joining Connecticut and Pennsylvania in officially recognizing Diwali, the Festival of Lights is set to shine even brighter across the United States in the years ahead.
