Supreme Court tariff ruling impact on US households: In a landmark decision on Friday, the Supreme Court struck down US president Donald Trump’s tariff policy, ruling that it was unconstitutional under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA). The law, designed for situations deemed an “extraordinary threat,” was previously used by Trump to justify tariffs that generated roughly $133.51 billion in revenue during fiscal years 2025 and 2026, accounting for more than 60% of the total revenue from his trade actions.

How Trump Tariffs Impacted American Households

While the tariffs were touted as a boost to national income, economists have repeatedly noted that American consumers and companies bore the brunt of the cost.

Liberty Street Economics estimates that the average household spent between $1,000 and $2,400 more because of the tariffs, and research from the Kiel Institute found that Americans absorbed as much as 96% of tariff-related price increases, as per The Express report.
