American taxpayer data in DOGE's crosshairs? Elon Musk's team eyes sensitive IRS taxpayer information and a 25-year-old may hold the key

Elon Musk's Department of Government Efficiency is eyeing the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) next, seeking taxpaying information of millions of Americans

The Department of Government Efficiency has been working round the clock around government expenses, but their means of seeking data has drawn them into controversy in recent days, especially after Social Security Administration's acting commissioner Michelle King resigned after DOGE sought sensitive information of millions of Americans that are stored with the SSA.

DOGE seeks access to IRS data

According to a Fortune report, Elon Musk's DOGE is now eyeing the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and seeking detailed financial information of American taxpayers, which has a possibility of receiving the green light if a memorandum of understanding between both bodies are signed. If the MoU is signed, it would give the Department of Government Efficiency access to the Integrated Data Retrieval System (IDRS), which will enable them to view taxpayer details typically available to IRS staff.

IRS data to fall into the hands of 25-year-old engineer

The IDRS provides that capability towards instantaneous visual access of taxpayer information, and all of this could be coordinated from DOGE's end by Gavin Kliger, a 25-year-old software engineer, who may now work in the IRS for 120 days, according to reports.

There are current concerns that taxpayers could be entitled to monetary damages if this access is indeed granted to Kliger and DOGE through the said Memorandum of Understanding. However, this is not just the first time DOGE has asked for access to classified data and has done the same with the Social Security Administration, and also the US Treasury.
