American hockey player Adam Johnson aged 29 tragically passed away after he succumbed to his injuries while playing against Sheffield Steelers in England on Saturday.

Johnson, a native of Minnesota, was playing for the Nottingham Panthers in a Challenge Cup match against the Sheffield Steelers.

"The Nottingham Panthers are truly devastated to announce that Adam Johnson has tragically passed away following a freak accident at the game in Sheffield last night," the team conveyed in a statement on Sunday morning.

Prior to his time with the Nottingham Panthers, Johnson had a noteworthy career.

He played for the Pittsburgh Penguins in the National Hockey League and spent the 2020-21 season in Sweden with the Malmo Redhawks. Following this, he ventured to Canada to join the Ontario Reign, and then to Germany to play for the Augsburger Panther, before agreeing to sign with Nottingham for the 2023-24 season.

The team extended their condolences to the fans and staff of both clubs, especially those who were in attendance or closely following the game. They also expressed gratitude to those who rushed to support Johnson in the face of such challenging circumstances.
