American Airlines was hit by a major disruption on one of the busiest travel days of the year, Christmas Eve, due to a technical issue that grounded all its flights across the United States. The Federal Aviation Administration confirmed that the airline requested a nationwide ground stop, which was lifted around 8 a.m. ET after the issue was resolved. Flights have since resumed boarding and departures, according to American Airlines.

Technical Glitch Delays Thousands of Flights

American Airlines attributed the delays to a system-wide technical problem that impacted weight and balance calculations necessary for flight operations. The airline, scheduled to operate over 3,300 domestic flights on Tuesday, apologized to passengers for the inconvenience in a public statement.

Passengers at airports across the country complained of a lack of information during the outage. David Myers, a traveler from Maryland heading to New Orleans, told CNN, "It's Christmas Eve, so complaining doesn't seem quite right.".

Social media was flooded with posts from affected passengers. One user on X (formerly Twitter) wrote, “Captain says @AmericanAir software outage preventing weight & balance calculations ‘company-wide’ with no estimate on resolution. Flights unable to depart as a result. Not a good start to Christmas Eve travel!”

A video shared from Fort Lauderdale airport captured an agent announcing to passengers, "Our system is down," as they were held at the gate.
