American Airlines adds fees—here are 5 checked baggage changes passengers should know

American Airlines has announced a series of updates designed to help travelers save time and money through enhanced digital and self-service baggage choices. The Texas-based carrier confirmed that it has extended its self-service luggage features and introduced digital improvements to make the process efficient and more convenient for passengers.

Five Key Changes to Checked Baggage Services

The airline has gradually introduced five main changes impacting all checked baggage services:

  1. Add Up to Three Checked Bags During Booking
Passengers can now include up to three checked bags when booking their flight, avoiding the requirement to wait until check-in to prepay. These updates are applicable to both the American Airlines website and app.

  2. Same-Day Adjustments Online
Travelers who prepay digitally can currently make same-day adjustments via their account without assistance from an airline agent, offering flexibility and ease. According to American, this will create “a more consistent and transparent experience.”

  3. Automatic Refunds and Travel Credits
If customers change, cancel, or upgrade their trips, prepaid baggage charges are refunded automatically. Refunds may be returned to the original payment method or provided as travel credits. Those travel credits can be redeemed solely for buying standalone bags. American described that this is “a major step toward more flexible checkout options and the future expansion of credits across additional ancillary products.”

  4. Premium Cabin Prepaid Bags
Travelers booked in premium cabins can now include their checked bags via the website or app before departure. “Together, these updates make it easier for customers to plan, change and manage their travel on their own terms — no calls, no lines, just a smoother digital experience,” the airline stated.

  5. Skip the Counter with Express Bag Tag Stations
All customers who prepay checked baggage can bypass queues at the desk by scanning their boarding pass at an Express Bag Tag station. Heather Garboden, American’s Chief Customer Officer, stated: “Any time we can make the travel experience streamlined and more convenient before arriving at the airport is a win for our customers.” She further said, “We continue to update our digital channels to provide our customers with even more self-service options.”

Updated Fees for Checked Bags

Along with these improvisations, American Airlines has modified charges for second checked bags. For domestic and short-haul flights, which includes routes to Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands, the second checked bag fee has raised to $50 for tickets booked on or following February 18. Passengers who prepay digitally or through the app will still pay $45, preserving the earlier rate via a $5 digital discount. No adjustments have been made to charges for the initially checked bag.
