The 'Man of the Hole' had been living in complete isolation for 26 years and was the last of his indigenous tribe. Officials found his body in front of his straw hut in a hammock on August 23. There was no evidence of violence or foul play.

Where was 'Man of the Hole' living?

His group's other six members died in 1995, and 'Man of the Hole' was the last remaining. Reports suggest that ranchers killed most of the tribe in the 70s because they wanted to increase the area of their land. Reports indicate that the 'Man of the Hole' was around 60 years old and died naturally. While no incursions or disturbances were found, police will still investigate after the post-mortem.

Right to the Land

The indigenous people could keep their land in Brazil, and the reason why ranchers wanted it killed them. Brazil's Indigenous Affairs Agency (Funai) has been monitoring the 'Man of the Hole' for his safety since 1996.

Members of the agency spotted and filmed the 'Man of the Hole' in 2018 when he was cutting a tree with something that looked like an axe.

While no one had seen the 'Man of the Hole' since 2018, the officials came across his deep holes and straw huts. Officials believe they had spikes at the bottom for trapping and hunting animals. They also think he dug holes to hide from outsiders when they approached.
