Amazon to shut down Android Appstore and Amazon Coins programme by August 2025

The Amazon Appstore, launched 14 years ago, will be discontinued later this year. The e-commerce giant has also announced plans to wind down its digital currency programme, Amazon Coins.

But the app store will remain functional on Amazon’s own devices, including tablets and streaming devices.

Amazon Appstore shutdown date

A new FAQ page on Amazon’s website states that the Amazon Appstore will no longer be available on Android devices from August 20, 2025. Amazon also mentioned that apps downloaded from the store may not work on Android phones after this date.


The app store was first launched on Android in March 2011.

This means users will no longer be able to download the Amazon Appstore on Android phones or tablets after August 20, 2025. Any active subscriptions with auto-renewals should be cancelled.

To do this, users need to go to their Amazon account and navigate to:

Digital Content and Devices > Your Apps > Manage > Your Subscriptions.

The Amazon Appstore will still function on Amazon’s own devices, such as Fire tablets and Fire TV, which run on Fire OS, but it will no longer support Android devices.

Discontinuation of Amazon Coins

The company will also end the Amazon Coins programme on the same date, meaning the digital currency will no longer be available for purchase. Amazon Coins can be used to buy apps or make in-app purchases through the Amazon Appstore.

Users must use their Coins by August 20, after which any remaining balance will be refunded.

Though Amazon has not provided a reason for ending support for Android devices, it is worth noting that Android 15 has introduced stricter restrictions on sideloaded apps. Additionally, Google has implemented new tools that allow developers to require app downloads exclusively through the Google Play Store, making it harder for alternative app stores to function.
