Amazon Prime's Premier League Coverage Ends This Week: What's Next for Football Fans in 2025?

Amazon Prime Video's coverage of the Premier League comes to an end this week, marking a shift in how fans will watch their favorite teams.

Amazon Prime Video will end its coverage of the Premier League this week after six years of broadcasting. Fans will enjoy two days of Premier League action on December 26 and December 27, but these will be the last fixtures aired by Amazon under its current broadcasting deal with the Premier League. This move marks the end of Amazon's unique role in broadcasting all ten games per matchday, without any kick-off times being blacked out.

Why Amazon Prime Video is Ending its Premier League Coverage

For the last six years, Amazon has been offering two full Premier League matchdays per season. However, this partnership will conclude at the end of 2024, as the Premier League entered a new round of broadcasting rights negotiations. Amazon's exclusive 20-game-a-season package was not available when the Premier League sold its rights last year. Instead, the rights for 2025-2026 and beyond have been split between Sky Sports and TNT Sports (formerly BT Sport).

According to The Athletic, Amazon would have needed to pay over ten times the £30 million per season it had been paying to continue its Premier League coverage beyond this year. As the report explains, Amazon opted out of the auction, leading to Sky and TNT securing the new broadcasting rights. This shift signifies a return to the "old guard" of broadcasters, despite the hope that Amazon could bring long-term competition to the market.

For many football fans, Amazon Prime Video was the only platform that provided live Premier League coverage at home. With millions of households already subscribed to Prime for shopping benefits, watching Premier League games became an added bonus. Amazon also provided free trials to attract new subscribers, but those days are now over. Starting next season, fans will need access to TNT or Sky to watch Premier League games legally at home.

For those who still have access to Sky or TNT, the good news is that a record 270 of the 380 Premier League games will be available to watch live. Although Amazon’s reign has ended, the coverage will remain extensive, with a variety of options for fans who subscribe to these platforms.

FAQs:

Why did Amazon stop bidding for the Premier League rights?
Amazon chose not to bid for the new Premier League rights as the cost to continue broadcasting was significantly higher than before. The new rights package would have cost more than ten times what Amazon was previously paying.

How was Amazon's coverage different from Sky or TNT?
Amazon’s coverage was unique because it offered all ten games per Matchday exclusively live, with no blackout on kick-off times, which Sky and TNT do not do.
