The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) accused Amazon of tricking people into signing up for Prime and making it hard to cancel. Amazon has now agreed to pay a record-breaking $2.5 billion. The deal includes $1 billion in fines and $1.5 billion for refunds to customers who were affected, as per a report by The New York Post.

Who is eligible for the refund?
Customers in the U.S. who signed up for Prime between June 23, 2019, and June 23, 2025, can get their money back. People who tried to cancel but couldn't during that time are also covered. Refunds are limited to $51 per eligible customer, making this one of the biggest efforts to help consumers in history, as per a report by The New York Post.
How will the refund payment be made?
There will be two rounds of refunds. Customers who signed up through "challenged enrollment flows" like the Universal Prime page, Prime Video, shipping select pages, or one-page checkout and used no more than three Prime benefits in a 12-month period will get automatic payouts. The FTC order says that these payments should be made within 90 days.

What did the FTC say Amazon did wrong?
Amazon, on the other hand, said that it followed the law and that the settlement lets the company "move forward and focus on innovating for customers."
Thus, Prime members who are eligible should keep an eye on their email and mailbox for notices of refunds and instructions on how to claim them.
