Amazon Prime refunds

Amazon Prime refunds: Millions of Amazon Prime customers in the United States are beginning to see money returned to them after Amazon agreed to a $2.5 billion settlement with the Federal Trade Commission over how the company signed people up for its Prime service.

Amazon Prime refunds: customers begin receiving refunds after FTC settlement

The FTC accused Amazon of enrolling customers into Prime memberships through deceptive sign-up processes and then making it unnecessarily difficult to cancel those subscriptions, as per a report. According to the agency, those practices violated consumer protection laws and led to widespread complaints from consumers.

How Amazon’s $2.5 billion FTC settlement is divided

As part of the settlement, the FTC said $1.5 billion of the total amount will be paid directly to eligible Prime customers in the form of refunds and the remaining $1 billion will go to the federal government as a civil penalty, as per a Newsweek report.

When Amazon Prime refund payments were sent

Refund payments to millions of customers were automatically issued between November 12 and December 24, 2025. Eligible customers were notified by email from Amazon and given the option to receive their refund through PayPal or Venmo, with 15 days to respond. Those who did not select an electronic payment method are expected to receive a paper check mailed to their default shipping address this month. The FTC said those checks must be cashed within 60 days.

Who qualifies for an Amazon Prime settlement refund

The refunds apply to US-based Prime customers who signed up between June 23, 2019, and June 23, 2025, using certain enrollment paths, including the universal Prime decision page, shipping selection page, single-page checkout or Prime Video sign-up, as per the Newsweek report. To qualify, customers must have used no more than three Prime benefits in any 12-month period. Eligible refunds can total up to $51, reflecting the annual cost of a Prime membership.

What if you didn’t receive an automatic Amazon Prime refund

Customers who did not receive an automatic refund will still have a chance to claim their money, as a separate claims process is expected to open in 2026, as per the Newsweek report.

FTC says settlement puts money back in consumers’ pockets

Federal Trade Commission Chairman Andrew Ferguson said in September that, "Today, we are putting billions of dollars back into Americans' pockets, and making sure Amazon never does this again. The Trump-Vance FTC is committed to fighting back when companies try to cheat ordinary Americans out of their hard-earned pay," as quoted by Newsweek.

Amazon responds to FTC Prime settlement

Meanwhile, Amazon has previously told Newsweek that, "Amazon and our executives have always followed the law, and this settlement allows us to move forward and focus on innovating for customers. We work incredibly hard to make it clear and simple for customers to both sign up or cancel their Prime membership, and to offer substantial value for our many millions of loyal Prime members around the world. We will continue to do so, and look forward to what we'll deliver for Prime members in the coming years," as quoted by Newsweek.
