Amazon Games to come up with Lord of the Rings MMO game. See details

According to a latest announcement, Amazon Games will launch a new game, which will be based on The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings trilogy.

The new massively multiplayer online game’s development will be led by New World studio Amazon Games Orange County. This comes as Amazon looks to push further into video games, specifically when it comes to publishing.

The game, which is an all-new production, is different from an earlier attempt to come up with a Lord of the Rings MMO canceled in 2021 by Amazon.


The game will be “an open-world MMO adventure in a persistent world set in Middle-earth, featuring the beloved stories of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings literary trilogy”, as per the news release of Amazon.

No details have been shared about its release date. It is currently in early stages of development and may take some years to come to PC and consoles. To publish the game, Amazon has signed a deal with The Lord of the Rings rights holder Middle-earth Enterprises, which was bought recently by Swedish conglomerate Embracer Group.

This is the second attempt of the company to create a Lord of the Rings MMO. In 2019, the first attempt was announced but was also canceled just two years later.

Amazon, which also has the Lord of the Rings series The Rings of Power on Prime Video, has said that it “is unrelated to this upcoming MMO game in development with Amazon Games.”

The new game will not be the first game of its kind. In 2007, The Lord of the Rings Online was launched after the massive success of World of Warcraft.
