Aloe Vera Oil for Hair Growth Is Popular in California, But the Science Is More Careful
Although aloe vera oil is advertised as a home remedy for hair growth, there is insufficient evidence from academic studies to support such claims. The effects of aloe vera include its anti-inflammatory properties as well as its ability to moisturize and soothe the skin. Therefore, the use of aloe vera is popular due to its soothing properties. However, such effects will not necessarily aid in hair growth. Since hair follicles grow underneath the scalp, scientific evidence suggests that aloe vera alone does not help the hair follicles grow. Academic literature tends to list aloe vera as a complementary treatment option for hair loss rather than an effective remedy against hair loss. The difference between these two terms is crucial. Soothing one's scalp may provide relief and even make one feel better, but will not promote hair growth itself.

The growth claim remains unproven

This is primarily due to the absence of sufficient clinical studies. The literature review on aloe vera, especially that found via PubMed, provides insights into its biological mechanism involving tissue regeneration and wound healing. However, although it may be true, the biological principle involved is far from what hair growth entails. Moreover, previous systematic reviews, like those conducted by the Cochrane Library, reveal that there is insufficient evidence regarding its efficacy, particularly when it comes to wound care treatment. As it applies to hair growth, there is even less available evidence to back up the claim. Recent systematic reviews and meta-analyses have shown promising results regarding hair loss treatment, except for aloe vera. In other words, aloe vera is not included in the list of drugs with adequate evidence for clinical effectiveness.

Where does aloe vera fit in your routine?

Nonetheless, it can be used in everyday life, as it will definitely be helpful for those people who have dry or irritated scalps. Moreover, aloe products are generally safe to use, even though there is no guarantee of safety. There are some patients who may suffer from a reaction, such as irritation. This mostly happens because of the individual variability in concentrations in homemade preparations. In my opinion, it would be better to consider this product as something that provides comfort to people rather than heals their hair problems. To summarize, aloe vera oil cannot help people suffering from alopecia or any other problem related to hair growth. Nevertheless, it may positively affect the sensation of a person's scalp.
