British actor Tom Bateman has been cast opposite Lili Reinhart in The Love Hypothesis, the upcoming romantic comedy from Amazon MGM Studios and MRC. The film is based on the bestselling novel by Ali Hazelwood and is now in development.

Reinhart stars as Olive Smith, a dedicated biology PhD student. Bateman plays Dr. Adam Carlsen, a brilliant but intimidating professor.

The plot follows the two as they pretend to date for personal gain, only to find their feelings, and assumptions about love, challenged.



The film is directed by Claire Scanlon, known for the rom-com Set It Up. The screenplay is written by Sarah Rothschild (The Sleepover).

Producer Elizabeth Cantillon is joined by executive producers Reinhart, Catherine Hagedorn, and the book’s author, Ali Hazelwood.

Hazelwood’s novel, first published in 2021, spent ten months on the New York Times bestseller list. It gained international acclaim, selling in 40 countries and earning the title of Amazon’s Best Romance of the Year.


Bateman, known for roles in Murder on the Orient Express and Death on the Nile, is a frequent collaborator with Kenneth Branagh. He will also appear in Branagh’s upcoming thriller The Last Disturbance of Madeline Hynde and Nia DaCosta’s Hedda, another project for Amazon MGM.
