Each time you scoop an ice cream ball using a plain, one-hand scoop, you are unknowingly holding onto a bit of Black American heritage. According to a detailed profile by BlackPast, the man responsible for this ubiquitous device was Alfred L. Cralle, a porter in Pittsburgh who obtained a patent for his creation in 1897. He never got rich from it, and his story highlights how invention and recognition do not always go together.

A problem hiding in plain sight

Cralle was born on September 4, 1866, in Lunenburg County, Virginia, in the area now known as Kenbridge, which wasn't formally incorporated as a town until 1908, more than four decades after the Civil War ended. His father taught him carpentry, which gave him an early interest in mechanics. He later moved to Washington, D.C., where he attended Wayland Seminary. He eventually settled in Pittsburgh, where he worked as a porter in a hotel and a drugstore. It was ordinary work, but there was something that caught Cralle's attention that all others were ignoring. The servers who scooped ice cream had difficulty doing so. Ice cream would stick to their scoops. They needed both hands and two different tools just to fill up one cone or container with ice cream. The process was slow, difficult, and frustrating for customers lining up.

One thumb changed the process

Cralle designed a tool with an inbuilt scraper, operated with a one-handed squeeze of the handle, that let servers shape and release the ice cream without needing a second spoon. He filed his patent application in 1896. As Smithsonian Magazine's coverage describes it, Cralle's patent application characterized the invention as simple, strong, durable, and cheap to manufacture. The United States Patent Office agreed. On February 2, 1897, at the age of 30, he was granted Patent No. 576,395 for his "Ice Cream Mold and Disher."

The Smithsonian report says the Pittsburgh Press reported that Cralle’s invention could fill 40 to 50 dishes of ice cream per minute. This translates to about one scoop in every one-and-a-half seconds. For a late-19th-century drugstore counter with a line of impatient customers, that was a major speed boost. Historians quoted by Smithsonian say Henry E. Baker, a Patent Office examiner, included Cralle’s invention in his 1913 book, The Colored Inventor: A Record of Fifty Years, which helped shape how Black inventors were remembered.

Part of a much bigger pattern

Baker's project of documenting individual Black inventors sits alongside a broader statistical picture of that era. The research by economist Lisa D. Cook titled 'Violence and Economic Activity: Evidence from African American Patents, 1870 to 1940,' published in the Journal of Economic Growth, shows that patenting activity among Black Americans rose in the decades after the Civil War, peaking around 1899, before falling sharply in the early twentieth century. Cook's study links much of that decline to a rise in lynchings, riots, and Jim Crow–era restrictions, though later research has questioned that interpretation.

This particular invention fits perfectly into this period. As the Smithsonian Magazine report notes, Cralle was the first Black man in Pittsburgh to receive his own patent, a detail also confirmed by BlackPast's biography of him and by History.com's account of the invention. It suggests Cralle was part of a broader community of Black innovators who contributed to the evolution of life in America by developing practical inventions without much funding or recognition.

Cralle's scoop spread quickly. Drugstores, ice cream shops, and hotels across America adopted it within a few years. However, he never made much money from it, and people soon forgot his name as quickly as the invention had spread. Cralle went on to become a businessman and helped run the Afro-American Financial, Accumulating, Merchandise and Business Association in Pittsburgh before his death in 1920.
