Ames was arrested by the FBI in February 1994 after investigators found he had been spying for the Soviet Union and later Russia, as reported by Times Now. He later pleaded guilty to espionage, admitting he betrayed the United States for nearly ten years. His actions badly damaged CIA operations during the Cold War and exposed many secret intelligence missions.
Ames CIA career
Several CIA and allied intelligence sources were arrested and executed because of the information Ames gave away. Aldrich Hazen Ames was born in River Falls, Wisconsin, in 1941 and was the son of a CIA officer. He joined the CIA in the early 1960s and worked there for 31 years. Ames specialized in Russian intelligence and rose to senior positions inside the agency. In 1983, he became chief of the counterintelligence branch of the CIA’s Soviet division, as per Times Now report. This role gave him access to the names of US and allied spies working inside the Soviet Union. In April 1985, Ames secretly contacted KGB officers at the Soviet Embassy in Washington, DC. He offered classified US intelligence in exchange for money from Soviet intelligence.
Money and damage
Ames later admitted he was motivated by fear of exposure and a desire for money. He handed over hundreds of classified documents to the KGB and later Russian intelligence. These documents revealed the identities of CIA agents and exposed covert operations worldwide. The damage spread across Russia, Europe, and Latin America. The KGB paid Ames at least $2.7 million for his secrets. As many as 10 Soviet and Eastern Bloc intelligence sources were executed because of his betrayal. Many other sources were imprisoned, and the CIA’s spy network inside the Soviet Union collapsed. US officials said this damage weakened America’s understanding of Soviet power near the end of the Cold War, as stated by Times Now report.
Despite clear warning signs, Ames avoided detection for years. These warning signs included sudden wealth and long-term alcoholism. He bought an expensive house with cash and drove a luxury car without raising quick action. Internal CIA investigations were slow and failed to stop him early. A serious criminal investigation began only in 1993 and was mainly led by the FBI.
Ames was arrested on February 21, 1994. He pleaded guilty and was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole, as noted by reports. His wife, Rosario Ames, was accused of helping him and spending the spy money. Rosario Ames was sentenced to five years in prison for her role. At sentencing, Ames denounced US intelligence work as deceptive and self-serving. He remained in prison until his death. Aldrich Ames is widely remembered as the most destructive traitor in CIA history.
