Marry Peltola, a native of Alaska, becomes the first Alaskan to work in Congress and the first female to hold the seat for state. She competed against Republicans Sarah Palin and Nick Begich and also against Libertarian Chris Bye. After the death of Republican Don Young, Peltola won a special election to the seat for two years.
