Marcos Leonardo scored twice, including the decisive winner in the 112th minute, sending the Saudi Arabian side into the quarterfinals, where they will face Brazilian club Fluminense.
City had dominated the first half and led 1-0 through a controversial ninth-minute goal by Bernardo Silva, whose shot followed a possible handball in the buildup. Despite a 7-0 edge in first-half shots on target, City couldn’t extend their lead, as Al Hilal goalkeeper Yassine Bounou made a series of key saves.
Al Hilal turned the game around early in the second half, equalizing just 42 seconds in through Leonardo’s header and then taking a 2-1 lead in the 52nd minute thanks to Malcom’s clinical finish off a breakaway. City quickly responded, with Erling Haaland scoring off a rebound to make it 2-2.
In extra time, Kalidou Koulibaly’s powerful header from a Ruben Neves corner gave Al Hilal a 3-2 lead, only for Phil Foden to level things again at 3-3.
The winner came when Sergej Milinkovic-Savic’s header was parried by Ederson, only for the ball to fall kindly to Leonardo, who tapped it in with his right foot.
City came close late in regulation, with Manuel Akanji’s header hitting the post and Haaland nearly converting the rebound, only for Ali Lajami to clear it off the line. Ruben Dias also forced Bounou into a spectacular save.
Bounou finished with 10 saves in a heroic performance, while Al Hilal celebrated one of the greatest wins in Middle Eastern football history.
