An aircraft was taking off at Peru's main airport when it collided with a fire truck.

At Jorge Chávez International airport in capital Lima, a Latam Airlines plane bumped into a vehicle on Friday at 20.30 GMT. Social media videos showed that the aircraft caught fire and there was smoke from it. Two firefighters have died in the incident.

The airline tweeted that no passengers or flight crew were killed in this accident. However, it is still unknown why the fire vehicle drove onto the runway as the plane was preparing to take off for Juliaca.


According to Van Oordt, the Latam CEO Manuel, the flight was given a go-ahead to take off. He stated that they didn't know why the fire engine was there. According to Reuters, the prosecutor's office declared that it was looking into the incident for possible manslaughter.



According to Lima Airport Partners (LAP), the managing committee of the airport, flights at Jorge Chavez International airport have been halted through Saturday afternoon. International aircrafts have been diverted to Panama, Colombia and other Peruvian destinations, including Pisco and Arequipa. He stated that they were investigating all the required aspects that could explain the source of this incident.

On social media, President Pedro Castillo praised the firefighters. He remarked on Twitter, stating that he sends his sincere condolences to the family members of heroic firefighters Nicolás Santa Gadea and Angel Torres. He also mentions having them in his prayers and thoughts.
