AI-powered robotic arm transforms Carrara marble into a full-scale statue of Tyche

Traditional stone carving is getting reshaped by digital tools. Robotics firm Robotor completed a full-scale marble statue of the Greek goddess Tyche, illustrating how automated systems can be utilized for stone carving. The company is in Carrara, Italy. It is by using advanced robotic tools that the solid block of Carrara marble is made into a sculpture. Craftspeople involved only in the last stages of the process.

Robotic marble carving process

Computer Numerical Control (CNC) system is used by the Robotor used to do the statue's fabrication. The sculpture is carved by a multi-axis robotic arm. It is done directly from a solid block of Carrara marble.

Technicians made the design with software powered by Artificial Intelligence (AI). The tool paths needed for the carving are calculated by the cloud-based system. This helped the robotic equipment to follow challenging contours without the need of continuous manual programming.

Demanding stonework

In the demanding environment of quarry workshops, the machinery was made to function. Heavy-duty electrospindles attached to the equipment given the high torque required to work through dense natural stone and supported prevent the cutting tools from stalling.

With a goal of automating physically demanding stonework, the technology was developed by founders Giacomo Massari and Filippo Tincolini.

Sculptors were involved online in the final surface changes to refine delicate textures.
