Dutch icon Ruud Gullit feels Holland manager Louis van Gaal is still driven by his dismissal from Manchester United. Van Gaal, 71, has come out of retirement to help his team qualify for Qatar, and he now wants to attain glory. After two seasons at Old Trafford, he was fired by United in 2016, only 24 hours after they won the FA Cup against Crystal Palace at Wembley.

And Gullit, who captained Holland to the European Championship in 1988, said Van Gaal thinks it is the system and his tactics that make a team successful but it failed at Man United.

He stated that he liked the 3-5-2 system when he played for Oranje in the World Cup in Brazil. He reasoned that he could take that to Manchester United. But there they had a diverse bunch of players there, and it is the team - and the best players - that win games, not the system. At United, he had to start from scratch.




Van Gaal led Holland to third place in 2014, losing in the semi-finals to Argentina before defeating hosts Brazil 3-0 in the third/fourth place play-off. The Dutch have previously reached three World Cup finals, losing in 1974, 1978, and 2010. In South Africa, Bert van Marjwijk was the coach when they were defeated 1-0 after extra time by Spain.
