It has not been a week since Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced that the company's mid-level IT engineers would be replaced by AI agents or high-level AI coding and automation. And now, Meta has dropped another bombshell of an announcement, claiming that it is planning to layoff nearly 5% of their workforce, the bracket which is the most underperforming.

Meta announces fresh layoffs in 2025

This layoff is being wrapped under the guise of 'extensive performance-based cuts' in order to raise the level of performance in the company. The last time Meta went on a layoff spree was in October 2024, when they made a series of job cuts that drastically affected employees across the company’s Instagram, Facebook, and Reality Labs divisions.

It had even announced 2023 as their 'year of efficiency', and laid off thousands of employees and designations within the company. Therefore this latest announcement is nothing new, and has been the norm in the last couple of years for Meta.

Result of Meta layoffs? Stock prices sees decline

Shares of Meta were down by nearly 2.7% on Tuesday, as per a Barron report, which could be an inclination of the knee-jerk market reaction to this layoff announcements by Meta. Companies that announce sudden layoffs typically see a drop by a few points during the periodical range of this announcement, and Meta too had to bear the brunt of this market trend.
