The Utah Valley University (UVU), where conservative activist Charlie Kirk was shot and killed on Wednesday (September 10, 2025), will remain closed until next week, the university said in an update shared on its website. The university, in an update shared on September 10 following the tragic shooting incident, said that the UVU campuses will be closed from September 11 to 14 and all events and administrative operations will remain suspended during this time.

Reacting to the assassination of Charlie Kirk, Utah Valley University President Astrid Tuminez said that the UVU community was “shocked and saddened” by the death of Kirk, who had been invited by students to speak on campus.

“On behalf of Utah Valley University, we are shocked and saddened by the tragic passing of Charlie Kirk, a guest to our campus. Our hearts go out to his family. As we grieve with our students, faculty, and staff who bore witness to this unspeakable tragedy, UVU campuses will be closed from September 11-14,” the update on the UVU website read.


“All classes (in-person or virtual), campus events, and administrative operations will be suspended during this time. Please plan accordingly and make any necessary adjustments to your schedule,” the update further stated.

Utah Valley University closed: What was the update for students and employees?


The update was shared by Utah Valley University President Astrid S. Tuminez, Provost Wayne Vaught, Vice President of Student Affairs Michelle Kearns, UVUSA Student Body President Kyle Cullimore, and Vice President of People & Culture Marilyn Meyer.

“Students — coursework, assignment deadlines, and exams will be delayed to accommodate the campus closure,” the update read. “Faculty and supervisors, thank you for being flexible as we navigate through this difficult time. We encourage you to reach out to your students and employees with updates about expectations,” it further stated. According to the UVU website, all employees (full-time or part-time) will still receive regular compensation during the campus closure.
