After 'Oppenheimer', Cillian Murphy stars in Univeral Pictures' adaptation of 'Blood Runs Coal'. Know about mining drama

After winning an Oscar Award for his role in 'Oppenheimer', Cillian Murphy will soon start an ambitious project. He will star and produce 'Blood Runs Coal', which explores the conspiracy taking place in the late 1960s in Pennsylvania’s coal mines and depicts a shocking assassination that changed the history of American labor unions. Based on the 2020 book Blood 'Runs Coal: The Yablonski Murders and the Battle for the United Mine Workers of America', work on the mining film may begin soon.

Universal Pictures acquired the right to adapt Mark A. Bradley's book just two days before Cillian Murphy won the Best Actor Oscar for 'Oppenheimer'. The mining drama will narrate the story of a corrupt union leader who murders a rival and is taken down by the lawyer son of the slain coal miner.

What 'Blood Runs Coal ' is all about?

A second-generation coal miner, Jock Yablonski became an activist in the United Mine Workers union after his father was killed in a mine explosion. He united the coal miners and fought for safety, better working conditions and health benefits for them. Yablonski ran after union president Tony Boyle, who would tell the coal miners that mining was a dangerous business. Boyle was so angry at being challenged and exposed that he allegedly ordered the murder of his opponent. After three attempts, Yablonski was killed along with many other family members on New Year’s Eve.

Who will produce 'Blood Runs Coal'

Cillian Murphy and Alan Moloney will produce 'Blood Runs Coal' via Big Things Films, while John Davis and Jordan Davis will produce via Davis Entertainment. Bradley Coopers will executive produce it.

Cillian Murphy is also working on a sequel trilogy to 28 Days Later, the 2002 zombie feature that launched his career. The Oscar-winning actor is also busy with a Peaky Blinders movie.
