A well-known brand has recalled two of its fish products from the market because they were found to be unsafe for consumption. The New York-based company Haifa Smoked Fish is recalling its cold-smoked salmon and cold-smoked sea bass because they may have been contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, according to a Wednesday press release from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) confirmed the recall in a press release on Wednesday. They told people to check their purchases and return any items that were affected right away, as per a report by The Independent.
What kinds of fish products are being recalled?
The recall only affects two specific lots of Haifa goods:
Food Warning: Haifa's COLD SMOKED SALMON and COLD SMOKED SEA BASS
• Both are sold in 8-oz packages.
• Lot codes 219 and 212.
How did they find out about the contamination?

Fish contamination was “discovered after sampling by New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets Food Inspectors, and subsequent analysis of Food Laboratory personnel revealed the presence of Listeria monocytogenes,” as per the press release, reported The Independent.
So far, no illnesses have been linked to the recalled items. People who bought them are being asked to bring them back to the store where they bought them for a full refund.
Why is Listeria contamination so dangerous?
The FDA says that Listeria monocytogenes can cause serious infections, especially in young children, older adults, and people with weak immune systems.
The FDA says, “Although healthy persons may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea, L. Monocytogenes infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.”
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Listeria is the third most common cause of death from foodborne illness in the United States, killing about 260 people each year.
Other recalls that have happened recently are linked to Listeria.
This fish recall is just the most recent in a long line of warnings about Listeria this year. Endico frozen vegetables, like peas, carrots, and mixed vegetables, were recalled just two weeks ago because they tested positive for contamination.
In August, the Middlefield Original Cheese Co-Op in Ohio recalled more than 5,000 pounds of cheese. Doehler Dry Ingredient Solutions, LLC also pulled Member's Mark Freeze Dried Fruit Variety Packs because of the same bacterial risk.
People are told to look at the lot codes, not eat the contaminated food, and return it for a full refund. People in the U.S. are still very worried about food safety, especially after a string of recent recalls.
