Conservative political commentator Steven Crowder, known for his provocative Change My Mind series, returned to Southern Methodist University (SMU), Dallas, Texas, on September 30, 2025, to host an on-campus debate. The event marks another chapter in Crowder’s long practice of inviting public discourse around divisive issues, this time under the shadow of recent high-profile political violence incidents, including the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.

Held on the lawn of SMU’s Bob Smith Health Center, the debate was framed around the statement: “The Left is Violent.” This theme, drawing from increased nationwide political polarization and real-world violence, resonated deeply with a largely conservative crowd, as many attendees expressed agreement with Crowder’s viewpoint.

He launched his career in entertainment as a voice actor and comedian but built his reputation in the political media sphere through his wide-reaching YouTube channel and daily podcast, Louder with Crowder. His political leanings are distinctly right-wing, and he is known for his cultural criticism, often challenging progressive viewpoints.

Crowder’s Change My Mind series, which began around 2018, quickly became a viral sensation for its format: hosting impromptu debates in public spaces with controversial statements displayed on signs, inviting anyone to sit down, challenge him, and “change his mind.” The series has tackled topics from gun control to transgender issues, immigration, and now political violence. His approachable yet confrontational debating style has won both fervent supporters and vocal critics.

Steven Blake Crowder was born on July 7, 1987, in Detroit, Michigan, before moving to Canada during his early years, which shaped his binational identity. He married Hilary Korzon in August 2012 and got divorced in 2021. The couple has twins, a girl and a boy, born in August 2021.

Heightened security measures

Given the event's sensitive nature and recent political violence nationally, security was tight. Crowder, known for stirring heated conversations, wore a bulletproof vest while standing behind a large bulletproof barrier. Security included a coalition of Texas state troopers, SMU Police, Dallas Police, firefighters, and Crowder’s personal security team. SMU Chief of Police Jim Walters emphasized cooperation between local, state, and federal agencies to assure the safety of the campus community and visitors.

Crowder also made sure that his visit was kept under wraps until the very last hour to ensure maximum safety. He commented humorously on his discomfort wearing protective gear, saying, “I’m tired of sitting down in this bulletproof vest. It’s killing my spine.”
