Actor Ana De Armas reacts to NC-17 rating for her Marilyn Monroe movie 'Blonde'

Ana De Armas, the popular Cuban-born star of the movie 'Blonde', is confused why it got an NC-17 rating as lewd language, explicit sexual content and excessive violence don't feature in the film.

The movie 'Blonde' is about the life of Marilyn Monroe and is expected to hit the theatres with an NC-17 rating. It means that the movie has been rated as 'for adults only', and children below 17 cannot go and watch the film even if accompanied by an adult.

The Motion Picture Association of America gives a rating of NC-17 if there is lewd language, nudity, and extreme violence in the film. Therefore the actress is a trifle confused as to why her movie 'Blonde' managed such a high age rating.

She expected an 'R' rating where a minor could see the film if accompanied by an adult. The actress felt that plenty of movies have explicit sexual content and made it to the 'R' category.

According to De Armas, Blonde has less sexual content than the ones she watched and deserved a better rating than NC-17. According to her, the sex shown in the movie 'Blonde' was necessary to depict the story being told, which certainly is not brazen enough to command an N-17 rating.

She told reporters that the reason had to be explained to show Marylin's life and how she ended up where she did. The cast had to be filmed in uncomfortable places, and she wasn't the only one to do that.

De Armas has acted in 'Knives Out', but 'Blonde' is her first-star role, and this didn't come easy to her. She was judged negatively by the fan club Marilyn Monroe, who felt that the actress spoke English with a Cuban accent.

De Armas didn't get bogged down by criticism and took the challenge head-on. She believed that anyone playing an iconic role would feel intimidated, and so too with her. However, she rose to the challenge and feels she has done a good job of showcasing her mental set-up of Marylin rather than imitating her on screen.

Mark Rosen of Marilyn Monroe Estate feels that Ana De Armas was a good choice to depict the role of Marylin. She has portrayed the late actress's glamour, humanity, and vulnerability in good measure.
Blonde is expected to release on Netflix on September 28 and is their first NC-17-rated film.
