Ace Frehley, the original lead guitarist and founding member of the legendary rock band KISS, passed away on Thursday at the age of 74. Known for his dazzling 'Spaceman' persona, Frehley thrilled audiences with his cosmic makeup, electrifying guitar solos, and signature smoking guitar effects that became a staple of KISS’ explosive live shows. Frehley died peacefully in Morristown, New Jersey, surrounded by family, following complications from a recent fall, according to his agent. He is survived by his wife, Jeanette, and his daughter, Monique.

In a heartfelt statement, Frehley’s family said they are 'completely devastated and heartbroken', adding that they will forever cherish his humor, generosity, and warmth. As part of KISS’ original lineup - alongside Paul Stanley, Gene Simmons, and Peter Criss - Frehley helped define one of rock’s most iconic eras. With hits like 'Rock and Roll All Nite' and 'I Was Made for Lovin’ You', KISS revolutionised live performance through their theatrical flair, pyrotechnics, and larger-than-life stage personas.

FREHLEY’S UNIQUE STYLE BEHIND KISS’ METEORIC RISE

Frehley’s distinctive guitar style and showmanship were integral to KISS’ meteoric rise in the 1970s. His passing marks the first loss among the band’s founding members, leaving behind a legacy that continues to inspire generations of musicians and fans. When the original four members were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2014, disagreements within the band derailed plans for a reunion performance, reported AP. Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley opposed the decision to honor only the founding lineup, objecting to the exclusion of then - current members Tommy Thayer and Eric Singer.

WHY ACE FREHLEY LEFT THE BAND?

Frehley left the band in 1982 due to creative differences, and struggles with substance abuse. Feeling that KISS had drifted from its hard rock roots, Frehley chose to pursue a solo career and founded the band Frehley's Comet, producing a number of hit albums. However, nostalgia and fan demand brought him back to KISS in 1996 for the band’s much-celebrated reunion tour with the original lineup. His return reignited the group’s classic chemistry and introduced KISS to a new generation of fans before he departed again in 2002. Frehley made occasional appearances with KISS in later years, reuniting with the band for select performances. Their 2023 concert at Madison Square Garden was billed as KISS’ final show.
