Steelers set to add veteran quarterback ahead of 2025 season
Quarterback Aaron Rodgers plans to sign with the Pittsburgh Steelers, according to sources cited by ESPN’s Adam Schefter. The agreement would bring an end to speculation surrounding the veteran quarterback’s next destination and fill a critical roster gap for the Steelers heading into the 2025 NFL season.

Rodgers, 40, became a free agent earlier this offseason after parting ways with the New York Jets. He is expected to travel to Pittsburgh this week and participate in the team’s mandatory minicamp beginning next week.

The Steelers, who let quarterbacks Russell Wilson and Justin Fields leave in free agency, have not made significant offseason moves at the position. Pittsburgh also did not use an early draft pick to address its quarterback depth, signaling openness to adding an experienced player like Rodgers. Mason Rudolph, who re-signed with the team earlier in the offseason, was expected to begin minicamp as the starter before news of Rodgers' plan surfaced.

If finalized, the signing sets up a high-profile Week 1 matchup between Rodgers and his former team. The Steelers are scheduled to open the 2025 NFL season on the road against the Jets, adding further intrigue to Rodgers' potential return to MetLife Stadium.

The move would reunite Rodgers with an AFC North franchise that has consistently relied on its defense and rushing attack in recent seasons. Rodgers, a four-time NFL MVP and Super Bowl champion, spent most of his career with the Green Bay Packers before a brief stint with the Jets, which was cut short due to an Achilles injury in his debut game last season.

Further details of the expected agreement have not been disclosed. As of now, no official contract has been announced by the Steelers or Rodgers’ representatives.
