"A Star Brighter Than the Sun" anime debuts October 3 on Amazon Prime Video worldwide

"A Star Brighter Than the Sun" (Taiyō Yori mo Mabushii Hoshi) will premiere on TBS in Japan on October 2 at 11:56 p.m. JST. Amazon Prime Video will begin worldwide streaming October 3 at 12:56 a.m. JST, making the romantic school anime available to international audiences.

The anime adaptation is produced by Studio KAI and based on Kazune Kawahara's manga series. Kawahara previously created "My Love Story!!," "High School Debut," and "Aozora Yell."

The anime features Minori Fujidera as Sae Iwata and Yūki Ono as Kōki Kamishiro in the lead roles. Additional cast members include Hina Yomiya as Hisui Onodera, Taito Ban as Yōta Ayukawa, Mutsumi Tamura as Mio Kagawa, Ryōta Ōsaka as Yūshin Izawa, and Haruka Shiraishi as Subaru Kamishiro.

Aya Kobayashi, known for work on "Vinland Saga" and "Spy×Family," serves as director at Studio KAI. Yasuhiro Nakanishi oversees script supervision for the series. The opening theme "Stellar Days" is performed by Motohiro Hata, while Wanuka performs the ending theme "Saishin-wa" (Latest Episode).

Viz Media describes the manga's plot focusing on childhood friends Sae and Kōki as they enter high school. Sae realizes her feelings for Kōki have developed beyond friendship, but discovers she is not the only girl interested in him.

"Sae and Kōki have been childhood friends, but as they enter high school, Sae realises her feelings for Kōki have grown. However, she isn't the only girl interested in him. Amidst the ups and downs of teenage emotions, Sae must navigate friendship, love, and self-discovery to understand where her heart truly lies," according to Viz Media's description.

Kazune Kawahara manga background and publication history

Kawahara launched "A Star Brighter Than the Sun" in Shueisha's Bessatsu Margaret magazine in June, 2021. The manga series has published 12 volumes as of August 25, 2025, and continues serialization.

Kawahara's previous works include the popular romantic comedy "My Love Story!!" and other school-focused manga series. The creator's reputation for heartfelt storytelling and character development has established a dedicated fanbase for romantic manga series.

Amazon Prime Video global anime streaming expansion

The worldwide release of "A Star Brighter Than the Sun" on Amazon Prime Video represents the platform's continued expansion of anime content for international audiences. The streaming service provides same-day access to the series following its Japanese television broadcast.
