A new state of consciousness has been found and it’s got something to do with dreams

Lucid dreaming isn't sleep or wake, it's a third state of consciousness where the mind takes control
Imagine soaring through the sky or escaping a nightmare simply by realizing you're dreaming. In the rare and fascinating state of lucid dreaming, people become aware that they are inside a dream, and with that awareness comes the power to shape it, whether by flying, bending reality, or choosing to wake up.

Lucid dreaming is a phenomenon where individuals become aware that they are dreaming and can sometimes control the dream's narrative, which has long intrigued both scientists and dreamers alike.

Recent research, however, has uncovered that this state is not merely a blend of wakefulness and sleep but represents a distinct state of consciousness with unique neural characteristics.

In a groundbreaking study published in The Journal of Neuroscience, researchers led by Çağatay Demirel from the Donders Center for Cognitive Neuroimaging at Radboud University Medical Center in the Netherlands analyzed data from multiple laboratories across the Netherlands, Germany, Brazil, and the United States.

“This research opens the door to a deeper understanding of lucid dreaming as an intricate state of consciousness by pointing to the possibility that conscious experience can arise from within sleep itself,” Demirel said in a press release.

This collaborative effort resulted in the largest dataset of its kind, comprising 26 lucid dreamers and 43 sleep recordings.

Unique brain activity

The findings revealed that lucid dreaming exhibits a unique pattern of brain activity distinct from both REM sleep and wakefulness.

Key to this discovery is the identification of specific brain wave patterns associated with lucid dreaming.

Notably, scientists observe an increase in gamma wave activity in the right precuneus, a region linked to self-referential thinking and consciousness, at the onset of lucidity.

Additionally, beta waves, which are typically associated with active thought processes during wakefulness, are present in areas such as the right temporal and parietal lobes during lucid dreaming.

These regions are involved in spatial awareness, self-perception, and nonverbal memory.

The study also highlighted that lucid dreaming involves enhanced communication between different brain regions, a feature not commonly observed in other sleep states. This increased connectivity suggests that the brain may be simulating its reality, reflecting self-referential awareness and possibly motor awareness.

The neural activity patterns observed in lucid dreaming share similarities with those induced by psychedelic substances like LSD and ayahuasca, particularly concerning the precuneus's involvement.

For individuals who have experienced lucid dreaming, these revelations offer a scientific explanation for the vividness and control they feel within their dreams.

For researchers and enthusiasts alike, this study opens new avenues for exploring the intricate workings of consciousness and the potential applications of lucid dreaming in various fields, including psychology, neuroscience, and even therapeutic practices.
